Raising the age of marriage in Malawi

Malawi recently passed the Divorce, Marriage and Family Relations Bill, updating the legal age of marriage to 18, which previously stood at 16 or 15 with parental consent. According to the United Nations, Malawi currently holds the seventh-highest rate of child marriage with half of all girls married before 18, and 1 in 8 married before age 15. Early marriage decreases the likelihood girls will complete their education and poses many risks related to early pregnancy and sexual health. In order for the Bill to be successful, programs will need to be implanted to reduce poverty and change local practices.
